Charlottetown, PEI — Health PEI has launched a new Mobile Dental Clinic aimed at improving access to dental care across Prince Edward Island, especially for residents facing barriers to traditional dental services.
The mobile unit marks a major step in Health PEI’s mission to provide more equitable oral health care. It will travel to schools, long-term care homes, community care facilities, shelters, and outreach centers, bringing services directly to people who might not otherwise receive regular dental care.
The clinic’s rollout will happen in stages. It will begin with preventive care for schoolchildren this summer and continue into the fall school year. Later, services will expand to residential and community care settings.
The new mobile clinic is fully equipped with two treatment rooms. One room is wheelchair accessible and features a bariatric-compatible dental chair. A team of licensed oral health professionals—including dentists, dental hygienists, and dental assistants—will provide care.
“This is about health, dignity, and equity,” said Melanie Fraser, CEO of Health PEI. “We’re breaking down barriers and making sure every Islander, regardless of age, income, or location, has access to the care they deserve.”
Dr. Amy Mihaljevich, Senior Dental Consultant for Provincial Dental Programs, noted that the initiative builds on the success of existing dental efforts. “The Mobile Dental Clinic will help address critical gaps in care—starting with schools and expanding to long-term and community care settings,” she said. “It strengthens the work we began with the Provincial Dental Care Program, which has seen strong participation since it launched in 2021.”
Health PEI says the mobile unit is a practical step forward in improving health outcomes and reducing disparities in oral health across the province.
