A Victorian-era property in Sheffield, once home to wholesalers and previously used as a warehouse for grocers, coffee roasters, and tea blenders, is being transformed into a modern dental clinic. The building, known as The Nichols Building, is located at the junction of Shalesmoor Road and Shepherd Street, near Sheffield city centre’s inner ring road and Kelham Island.
Matthew and Anupa Stephens, a husband and wife dental team, plan to open their new practice, Lateral Dental Clinic, in June 2025. The couple will operate a private dental service from the 2,413-square-foot space, which is undergoing renovation to blend modern design with elements reflecting Sheffield’s industrial heritage.
“This is our first time owning a dental practice, and we’re very excited,” said Matthew Stephens. “We were drawn to the building because of its beautiful arched windows, its prime location on the main route between Kelham Island and the city centre, and the opportunity to provide high-quality dental care in an area that really needs it. We want to become a vital part of the local community and Sheffield as a whole.”
The clinic will offer a full range of general and cosmetic dental treatments. It will be equipped with both gas and air (inhalation) sedation and intravenous sedation options—services rarely available together in South Yorkshire. These sedation choices aim to help both nervous children and adults feel more comfortable during treatment.
Anupa Stephens said, “Our goal is to create a beautiful, relaxing space that changes how people view dental care. We want to provide exceptional service and make patients feel at ease.”
