National Dental Plan Now Open to All Eligible Canadians as of May 29

by Audrey

Canada’s national dental care plan, launched in 2024 by the federal Liberal government with support from the NDP, is now open to all eligible Canadians as of May 29.

When the plan first started, it covered seniors aged 65 and older, children under 18, and adults with a valid 2023 Disability Tax Credit certificate.

The program expanded gradually in 2024:

On May 1, it opened to Canadians aged 55 to 64.

On May 15, it included those aged 18 to 34.

Finally, on May 29, it expanded to residents aged 35 to 54.

Now, the plan covers all eligible Canadians who meet these criteria:

Residents without access to dental insurance.

Residents with a family income below $90,000.

Residents who have dental benefits through a provincial, territorial, or federal social program and meet certain conditions.

Residents who filed income tax in the previous year.

However, if you already have dental coverage through your employer, professional association, or student organization but choose not to use it, you are not eligible for this plan. The coverage will be coordinated with any existing plans to avoid duplication or gaps.

How to Apply

To apply, you will need to provide details for yourself and your spouse or common-law partner (if applicable). This includes your social insurance number (if available for children), date of birth, full name, home and mailing addresses, and information about any dental coverage you receive through government programs.
