As part of National Children’s Dental Health Month, the Universities at Shady Grove dental clinic hosted Sealant Saturday on February 15, 2025. The event provided free dental screenings and sealant applications to 30 young patients.
Organized by the University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD), Sealant Saturday featured 40 dentistry and dental hygiene students who worked under faculty supervision. Their focus was on preventive care aimed at preventing cavities among children in Maryland. The event was a collaboration with the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).
Tricia Boyce, DDS, the dental director for Montgomery County DHHS, emphasized the importance of the initiative. “By collaborating with the School of Dentistry on this event, we are able to raise awareness about its presence in Montgomery County as a dental care partner,” she stated. She noted that sealants can reduce the risk of tooth decay by up to 80 percent on molar teeth.
The sealant procedure involves applying thin plastic coatings to the chewing surfaces of back teeth, where decay often begins and brushing is difficult. This painless treatment is especially effective for children aged 5 to 14, coinciding with the emergence of permanent molars.
Ramsay Koury, DMD, a clinical assistant professor at UMSOD and co-organizer of the event, pointed out that many children who attended had already received some dental care. However, he stressed that the program is crucial for those who lack regular access to preventive services. It also serves as a reminder for parents about their role in maintaining their children’s dental health.
“Parents help maintain their children’s dental health by ensuring proper hygiene, healthy eating, and regular dental visits,” Koury explained.
To create a child-friendly atmosphere, the clinic included face painting, balloon decorations, and dental health-themed coloring books. The Shady Grove facility provides pediatric services year-round, including cleanings and preventive care, particularly for families who may not have regular access to dental services.
“This event provided an incredible opportunity for UMSOD to deliver essential dental education and serve as vital partners in combating tooth decay among children in the community,” said Halima Karim, DDS, FAGD, FACD, a clinical instructor at UMSOD and director of the Shady Grove clinic.
Koury added that the students enjoyed the experience and expressed interest in returning for future events.
In addition to Sealant Saturday for children, the Shady Grove clinic also hosts Mission of Mercy events that offer free dental care to underinsured adults. Sealant Saturday is expected to return to the Universities at Shady Grove in February 2026.
