The Canadian Dental Care Program (CDCP) is expanding eligibility this week, allowing more Canadians to apply for free dental coverage.
Launched in 2023, the CDCP is designed to ease the financial strain of dental care for Canadians with an annual income below $90,000. According to the federal government, the program could benefit up to nine million Canadians who do not have private dental insurance.
Beginning Thursday, May 15, Canadians aged 18 to 34 can submit their applications. On May 29, the program will open to those aged 35 to 54.
In a public announcement, the government stated: “The Government of Canada will send application invitations to residents aged 18 to 64 who may qualify for the CDCP, based on their adjusted household net income in 2024.”
However, even if you have not received a formal invitation, you can still apply. To do so, you must be in the eligible age group, have filed your 2024 tax return, and received your Notice of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). If you meet these conditions, you may apply once your age group becomes eligible.
For individuals already enrolled in the dental care plan, it is important to renew coverage for the 2025–2026 fiscal year by June 1. Renewal also requires a completed 2024 tax return and a current CRA assessment notice. Missing the deadline could result in a gap in coverage.
