The Connecticut State Dental Society (CSDA) recognized several members of the School of Dental Medicine this week at its annual meeting, honoring their outstanding service and contributions to the field.
Dr. Steven Lepowsky, dean of the School of Dental Medicine, received the CSDA Presidential Award—considered the association’s highest honor. The award is presented to individuals or groups who have significantly advanced the image and professionalism of dentistry in the state.
“This year’s awardees have demonstrated exceptional dedication, skill, and innovation in their respective areas,” the CSDA said in a statement.
Dr. Afroditi Pita, assistant professor of general dentistry, was named a Rising Star Award recipient. The award recognizes individuals for excellence in advocacy, community service, ethical leadership, and scientific achievement. Recipients often hold leadership roles within their school’s American Student Dental Association (ASDA) chapter or their local and state dental societies.
Joining Pita in receiving the Rising Star Award was Dr. Sarah Nevolis, a member of the School of Dental Medicine’s Class of 2025.
Dr. Elie Ferneini, associate clinical professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery, received the Horace Hayden Award. This honor is given to individuals who have made notable contributions to dental health and the broader interests of the profession.
All four honorees were recognized for their ongoing commitment to advancing dental education, patient care, and the profession’s future in Connecticut and beyond.
