Day Dedicated to Free Dental Care for Children Deemed a Success

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) — A local dental office provided free oral care to children without dental insurance during a recent community event.

Sunnybrook Dentistry and Braces in Hattiesburg held another successful Sharing Smiles Day. More than 20 children received quality dental treatment at no cost.

“We can reach out to the community to provide care for patients who don’t have dental insurance,” said Dr. Kineshia Roark, a dentist at Sunnybrook. “We assess their needs and offer necessary treatment.”

Staff members stressed the importance of making events like Sharing Smiles Day available to the community.

“We have many patients who need dental care but usually do not have access to it,” said Laneka Chaney, a dental hygienist.

“Several children were excited to come here for the first time.”

For children nervous about their first dental visit, the staff worked to make them feel comfortable.

“We aimed to help the kids love coming to the dentist,” said Keoshia Jackson, a dental assistant. “Many were happy and excited to be here.”

The success of Sharing Smiles Day was the result of a team effort. All staff members worked together to ensure the day ran smoothly.

“We took X-rays and helped the doctor and hygienist begin cleanings, fillings, and extractions,” said Michelle Gonzalez, a Sunnybrook employee.

The staff said the most rewarding part of the day was seeing children leave with big smiles.

“We gave them balloons, toothbrushes, and floss,” said Gail Thomas, a dental assistant. “It felt like a little party, which made the experience fun for the kids.”
