New Subsidised Dental Programme to Launch on May 26

A new government-subsidised dental programme will begin on May 26, offering around 40,000 appointment slots annually—more than double the capacity of the current public dental service.

The Community Dental Support Programme is aimed at underprivileged residents who receive government assistance, such as the Old Age Living Allowance or public hospital fee waivers. Eligible participants will be able to access subsidised dental care at 80 designated clinics.

Under the scheme, patients can receive tooth fillings or extractions at a cost of HK$50 per tooth. In some cases, the fee may be fully waived. Each patient can receive treatment for up to three teeth per visit and may apply for the service once every 180 days.

To qualify, individuals must hold a Hong Kong identity card and register with the government’s eHealth system.

Responding to concerns over the HK$50 fee, Department of Health consultant surgeon Dr. Sharon Lee said it was a modest charge in comparison to the value of treatment provided.

“Although the HK$50 is a fee, it is relatively small given the dental care offered,” she said. “There is also a safety net in place for those who may qualify for a full waiver.”

In addition to the new programme, the government will increase the service quota at nine public dental clinics by about 30 percent starting next month. This will bring the total number of general public appointments to around 26,000.

Officials noted that demand for dental services has surged since the launch of an online booking system, with all appointments quickly filled. They hope the new subsidised initiative, delivered in partnership with several non-governmental organisations, will provide an affordable alternative for those unable to secure public slots.
