Halton Launches New Oral Health Campaign to Combat Tooth Decay

A new oral health campaign is set to launch in Halton this month, aiming to reduce tooth decay and educate families about dental hygiene.

The initiative is part of the Cheshire and Merseyside All Together Smiling Programme, which is organizing a regional roadshow during National Smile Month. The campaign focuses on supporting vulnerable communities by promoting good oral health habits.

Halton will host one of the roadshow events on May 28, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., at Runcorn Old Town. The event is designed to engage children and families through interactive learning. Attendees will receive free toothbrush and toothpaste kits, free-flow drinking cups, and educational leaflets.

Professor Ian Ashworth, Director of Population Health for NHS Cheshire and Merseyside, emphasized the importance of oral health in broader public health strategies. “Initiatives like this allow us to address health inequalities by reaching people who need support the most,” he said.

Tooth decay is still the leading cause of hospital admissions for children aged five to nine. Data shows children in deprived communities are 3.5 times more likely to need tooth extractions than those in wealthier areas.

“These community roadshows make oral health education fun and approachable,” added Professor Ashworth. “They help us connect directly with parents and caregivers, giving children a healthier start in life.”

Dr. Elizabeth Crabtree, Programme Director of the Beyond Children and Young People Transformation Programme, also highlighted the broader goals. “Promoting oral health is about more than preventing decay. It’s about helping children build confidence and long-term wellbeing,” she said. “Brushing with fluoride toothpaste, when encouraged early, can make a lasting difference.”

The Halton roadshow will also feature a local oral health mascot to entertain children while sharing helpful hygiene tips. In addition, a local media group will run hands-on animation workshops for kids during the event.

This campaign builds on the success of the All Together Smiling Supervised Toothbrushing Programme, which has already distributed over 238,000 dental care packs across Cheshire and Merseyside.
