Each week, the nonprofit group known as the Traveling Tooth Fairies sets up a mobile dental office inside a different school in Nashua. The team rotates through all local schools, returning to each one after visiting the others, to ensure students receive the care they need.
The mission is simple: remove barriers to dental care. No child is turned away, regardless of insurance status.
By offering dental services to families facing financial challenges, difficult work schedules, or transportation issues, the Traveling Tooth Fairies also aim to educate children about maintaining good oral health. Students can participate in the program with a signed permission slip from a parent or guardian.
“This is our life. We eat, sleep, and breathe this work,” said Myra Nikitas, one of the Tooth Fairies. “Helping these kids is our passion.”
Nikitas, along with Mary Duquette, are not just Tooth Fairies—they are certified public health dental hygienists. Working under the supervision of Dr. John Echternach, they provide a range of services, including cleanings, screenings, fluoride treatments, sealants, and even cavity fillings without the use of drills.
“There are many children, not just in Nashua or New Hampshire, but across the country, who don’t receive proper dental care,” said Dr. Echternach.
The program is made possible by donations and support from organizations like the Nashua Lions Club and Northeast Delta Dental.
“Everyone deserves a healthy smile, and starting with early intervention in a school setting is the best way to achieve that,” said Tom Raffio, president and CEO of Northeast Delta Dental. “It’s hard not to get involved when you see such passion from hygienists like the Tooth Fairies.”
After a visit, one student shared their relief: “I’m so happy my tooth doesn’t hurt anymore.”
The Traveling Tooth Fairies hope to inspire similar programs throughout New Hampshire, bringing dental care and education to even more children in need.
